Issue 23 is long overdue; so to make up for lost time, we have a stellar, chocka collection of work! We’re delighted to welcome Switch first timers, Barbadian artist, Versia Harris with her whimsical digital swans, and our fellow Trini, Horacio Hospedales, with his Instagram explorations. We’re grateful to Andre Bagoo, Kriston Chen, Sharon Millar, Shivanee Ramlochan and photographer, Arnaldo James, for sharing their experiments in poetry and images with us. And we have spreads of congratulations for Christopher Cozier, Gerard H. Gaskin and Kei Millar, all of whom have had wonderful successes with their work recently. Thanks so much to designer Nadia Huggins, for her layered and complex design of this issue. Enjoy!

Can you believe it’s mid-September already? Good grief! Where has the year gone? September means fantastic things here in Trinidad and Tobago, as it’s film festival month! So, for the first time, this year we’ve collaborated with the folks at the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival on a piece about the art of the film poster.

Boy! 2012 was one helluva year for art in Trinidad and Tobago! Thinking back on it, I can scarcely remember such a profusion of riches! And our regular contributor, Marsha Pearce comments on the year in art. We have Marsha working real hard this issue, as she also reviews Alex Smailes’ recently concluded exhibition, “Alex Smailes: 10”. We’re delighted to be showing new work made speci cally for Switch by Brianna Mc Carthy, who we challenged to take inspiration from speci c works by poet, Olive Senior and jeweller, Jasmine Thomas-Girvan. (For one of her major exhibitions, “Gardening in the Tropics”, Thomas- Girvan referenced Senior’s poem of the same name.) Designer, Kriston Chen, creates a layout for a poem by Andre Bagoo, and photo essays by Kibwe Brathwaite and Arnaldo James illustrate two unique facets of Trinidad: our night life and the steel pan movement. A big thanks to Tanya Marie Williams for designing this issue of Switch, and to all our brilliant contributors.

Alice Yard, based in Port of Spain, draws on the long tradition of communal “yard” spaces in urban Trinidad, places of improvisation and exchange; and on the model of the Carnival mas camp, in which individual creative practitioners pool their ideas, techniques, and energy. Alice Yard is also a model for using participatory online media in Caribbean creative initiatives. It is at once a physical space, a collaborative network, and an ongoing conversation about contemporary art and creativity in this region.

Welcome to the 12th issue of Draconian Switch, which just seems to feature quite a lot of people whose names begin with the letter “R”. We welcome Mariel Rebecca Helena Brown to the writing fold as she does an article on Robert Young the “raise poor” Fashion Artist. Dave O. Williams comments on the Strangling of Carnival in the Mecca of Carnival. Rodell Warner has quite a few pieces in this issue as well. He chronicles in photo essay form the 3Canal (Wendell Manwarren, Roger Roberts, and Stanton Kewley) 2010 Jam It rehearsals, does the documentary for Dave’s piece, and gives us a taste of his CEPEP workers project. We cover Richard Rawlins’ Button Project, Dwight Campbell’s really cool life lesson book- I Febrezed My Dog, Jemima Charles’ Cones, and Indra Ramcharan- now relocated to London- does a piece on musician Nigel Rojas.
